What is Psychosexual Therapy?
Sexual difficulties can make people feel very alone. Some people feel so fearful, self-conscious or ashamed of their sexual problem that they suffer for months or even years without discussing their worries with anyone, even their partner. Yet, sexual difficulties are very common and can have many causes. Their origins may be:
- Physical (the effect of illness, accident, surgery, disability or medications)
- Psychological (anxiety, depression or other mental health problems)
- Emotional (unresolved grief or unhappiness due to other problems in the relationship)
- Situational (they only happen under certain circumstances such as when your in-laws are staying!)
How does it work?
Ten sessions are offered initially, although not all patients require that amount of treatment.
The therapist uses an integrative approach; however, most sexual and relationship therapy interventions are derived from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, complimenting the therapists already extensive experience as a psychological wellbeing practitioner using low intensity CBT based treatment.
During the sessions the therapist will help you to talk about your sexual concerns, as well as explore the possible sensitive areas in your relationship. You will never be asked to undertake sexual tasks during sessions.

Psychosexual therapy has proven effectiveness for: General breakdown in a couple’s sexual relationship, Loss of sexual desire, Painful intercourse, Sexual difficulties following abuse, Difficulties with orgasm, arousal disorders, premature or delayed ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.
