Information for carers

All of our team are fully trained to ensure patients receive the most effective treatment for their mental health. However, sometimes they need the support of their family and friends.

Carers save the government roughly £119 billion each year. They are a huge part of a patient’s recovery. Sometimes we don’t choose to be carers, it gets thrust upon us and we have to get on with it.

If you know a friend or family member that is suffering from mental health issues then you may be feeling quite helpless, as a lot of carers generally do. However, there are lots of different, and very simple, things you can do for them that will make the experience a lot easier.

Here is a list of tips that you can follow to help them on their way to positive mental health:

  1. If they have not yet been, encourage them to visit their local GP to discuss the issues they are facing.
  2. Try to not bombard them with questions.
  3. Make sure you keep in touch.
  4. Try and talk about things other than mental health.
  5. Be patient, ups and downs do happen.
  6. Remind them that you care and you’re there if they need you.
  7. Try to avoid clichés like “cheer up “or “pull yourself together”.
  8. Be aware of what it is they want. If they want to talk about their issues, then talk about them.

Mental health, contrary to physical health, can go completely unnoticed. So for you to recognise this in the first instance is a huge achievement.
